Sergey Mazov. Cold War in the “Heart of Africa” USSR and the Congo Crisis, 1960–1964.

Guided by the documents from the archives of Russia, Great Britain and to a lesser extent of the United States, Mazov investigates the role of the USSR in the Congo crisis (1960–1964), the Soviet motives, intentions and actions in the context of the policies of the other actors, foreign and Congolese. The author explores the key factors that made the Soviet leadership refrain from taking steps that could lead to an escalation of the crisis.
