Summary

The book by Vladimir Shubin, Principal Research Fellow of the Institute for African Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences and Professor of the Russian State University for the Humanities is devoted to the national liberation movement in Southern Africa during the period of the “Cold War” and the role of the USSR/Russia in rendering support to their struggle. It is based on the Russian and foreign archive documents, reminiscences of the participants and the personal experience of the author who before joining the academia was involved in political and practical assistance to the liberation struggle, in particular as Secretary of the Soviet Afro-Asian Solidarity Committee and Head of the Africa Group (Section) of the International Department of the CPSU Central Committee. For his “excellent contribution to the struggle against colonialism and apartheid” he is awarded the South African Order of Companions of O. R. Tambo (silver).
